Mercedes Castillo

South Florida Field Organizer

Mercedes Castillo was born in La Habana, Cuba in 1951. She graduated from the Instituo Superior Politecnico Jose A. Echevarria with a Certificate in Economics and the University of Havana with a BA in Architecture. She moved to Miami Florida in 2003 and started working for Democracia USA as a canvasser in late 2004. After working for a few months, Mercedes was promoted to captain in 2005, where she led a team of six canvassers during different issue-based campaigns on immigration, education, and civil rights. In 2006, Mercedes graduated from the DUSA Leadership Academy and began Democracia USA’s voter registration campaign of that year as a team captain. During that campaign her team was continuously rewarded for surpassing the expected goals. In 2008 she was promoted to South Florida Field Organizer, a post that she currently holds.
