A group of Caribbean-American attorneys are having a citizenship and voter-registration drive today, hoping to get more immigrants to become U.S. citizens and have a say in the nation's political debate.
Attorneys from the Central Florida chapter of the Caribbean Bar Association will lend their time and expertise for free to eligible immigrants who need to complete the paperwork to apply for citizenship or register as voters.
Not all immigrants qualify to become U.S. citizens, though. The volunteer attorneys can only help immigrants who enjoy permanent residency status and have lived in the United States for five consecutive years -- or those of the same status who have been married to a citizen and lived in the U.S. for three consecutive years.
