Democracia U.S.A.

Arizona

Nearly 1.8 million Latinos live in Arizona, but this state is seemingly losing ground in the fight for immigrant rights and electoral protections. The anti-immigrant sentiment is palpable throughout the community and government, from tough anti-immigrant local ordinances to disenfranchising voter registration laws that target new naturalized citizens considering that 19% of Hispanic eligible voters in Arizona are naturalized U.S. citizens. With no ongoing field infrastructure to counteract it, Democracia U.S.A. has helped fill that void by working with the local citizen and community-based leadership to empower the community through education, civic engagement, and leadership training. There are approximately 673,000 eligible Hispanics voters in Arizona, and Democracia U.S.A. estimates there are many thousands more that are not registered to vote. But Arizona is 29% Hispanic. So opportunities for Latino empowerment through civic participation are very real but require continuous on-the-ground fights for Latino civil rights.
