D-USA Provides Civic Engagement Tools to New Jersey Youth
In collaboration with the Camden County Technical School in Pennsauken, New Jersey, Democracia USA invited nearly 30 high school seniors to participate in a conversation about voting and civic engagement opportunities. All high school seniors that were turning 18 years of age on or before New Jersey’s presidential primary election on February 5th were invited to participate and engage with Democracia USA staff and Union Organization for Social Services President Denise Velasquez.
Youth participants were shown American Dreams, a moving film narrating the Hispanic and immigrant story in America. Democracia USA also educated the school youth on the many forms of civic engagement to directly address and solve issues in their community—from volunteerism to organizational involvement to electoral participation. The New Jersey high school students registered to vote on the spot for the February presidential primaries. Throughout the day, Democracia USA continued to offer civic engagement services to other high school student.
